Asahi Linux bijna klaar voor Macs met M3-chip

Asahi Linux is bijna ready for Macs equipped with Apple's M3 chip. The developers confirmed this progress in a recent update, hinting at an official release within weeks.

The team has been working intensively to adapt the operating system for newer Apple silicon, which introduced significant changes compared to previous generations. Key improvements include support for the built-in microphones on M3 MacBooks and the updated USB controller found in M3 Pro and Max variants.

Additionally, firmware updates for the GPU and display controller have been finalized, bringing Asahi Linux closer to full compatibility. While M4 support is also underway, it remains less advanced, with Wi-Fi functionality still posing challenges. Early development work on M5 support has already begun. Currently, Asahi Linux runs on M1 and M2 Macs, though limitations persist, such as lack of support for USB-C displays, Thunderbolt, USB4, and Touch ID.

Apple switched to its own ARM-based chips in 2020, ending native support for other operating systems like Windows and traditional Linux distributions. Asahi Linux aims to reverse this trend by manually adding chip support to the Linux kernel and distributing a custom Fedora-based version optimized for modern Macs.
